HUNTINGDON, Pa. ? Two dominating pitching performances from visiting Gettysburg College overcame a pair of solid efforts from Juniata College hurlers as the Eagles were stopped by a pair of 5-0 scores in doubleheader action in Huntingdon Thursday afternoon. The two losses dropped Juniata to 6-12 on the year, while Gettysburg raised its record to 9-2 with the two triumphs.
In game one a scoreless pitcher?s dual between Juniata?s Jessica Darrow (Wellsboro/Wellsboro) and Gettysburg?s Shannon Kiry was broken open with five runs in the top of the seventh inning. The second game then belonged to Gettysburg hurler Kristy Rubino who allowed no hits in six innings while fanning 14 Juniata hitters.
In game one, both Darrow and Kiry kept the offenses at bay throughout the contest as the team?s combined for just eight hits through the first six innings. Juniata?s best chance to get on the scoreboard came in the fourth inning when a walk and a single from Marcie White (Central Dauphin East/Dauphin) put runners on first and second with two out. But Kiry fanned the final batter to get out of jeopardy.
Darrow kept the Bullets at bay through several jams as she stranded at least one runner on base in five of the first six innings. The visitors finally broke through in the seventh with an RBI single from Nicole Yannotta broke the scoreless tie and make it a 1-0 game. After a walk loaded the bases, Abbe Miller delivered a grand slam home run that just cleared the wall in left field and gave Gettysburg its final 5-0 margin.
Darrow was charged with the loss as she surrendered all five runs on nine hits while fanning two. Kiry allowed four hits over seven innings to earn the victory. No Juniata hitter managed more than one hit in the contest.
In game two, the Eagles were never able to get started offensively as Rubino allowed just two base runners over six innings, with both players reaching on errors.
Juniata hurler Lizzi Bartosik (Penn/Granger, Ind.) matched Rubino through the first two innings, before the visitors scored a pair of runs in the third. Heather Sagaities singled with one out and then came home on Miller?s second home run of the day. Gettysburg added another three runs in the fifth as a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded walk brought in the first two runs, and then Katie Eiden added an RBI single to cap the scoring.
Bartosik went 4 2-3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits while striking out two.
Juniata will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles host Commonwealth Conference foe Moravian.
