Defense Policy Expert Lectures on 'Resource Wars'

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- An expert on U.S. defense policy, the global arms trade and world security issues will lecture on "Resource Wars: The New Geography of Conflict" at 8:15 p.m. Nov. 11 in Alumni Hall in the Brumbaugh Science Center on the Juniata campus.
The event is free and open to the public. The lecture is sponsored by the Baker Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies.
Michael Klare, author of "Resource Wars: The New Landscape of Global Conflict," has written on a wide variety of subjects relating to defense issues, world security and the arms trade. He also has written several books on these issues, including "Rogue States and Nuclear Outlaws," "American Arms Supermarket," "Supplying Repression" and "War Without End: Planning for the Next Vietnams."
Klare is the Five College Professor of Peace and World Security (a joint appointment in which Klare works at Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst). He also is director of the Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies. He has been director of the program since 1985.
A prolific writer, Klare also works as defense correspondent for The Nation magazine and is a contributing editor of Current History. He has written articles for Arms Control Today, Foreign Affairs, Harper's, Foreign Policy and Technology Review. He also edited or co-edited seven books and publications -- most of them focusing on arms and security issues.
He earned a bachelor's degree in 1963 and a master's degree in 1968, both from Columbia University. He earned a doctorate in 1976 from the graduate school of the Union Institute.
Klare serves on the board of directors of the Arms Control Association, the National Council of the Federation of American Scientists and on the advisory board of the arms division of Human Rights Watch. He is a member of the Committee on International Security Studies of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
