Eagles Tennis Suffers Conference Loss
(Posted April 13, 2006)
GRANTHAM, Pa. ? The Juniata College men?s tennis team got a glimpse of the foe it will have to go through in order to earn a Commonwealth Conference championship, and on this occasion the foe was too much to overcome as the Eagles suffered a 7-0 set-back to Messiah College Thursday afternoon. The loss dropped Juniata to 13-3 on the year and 4-2 in conference play, while Messiah improved to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
Despite the loss, Juniata will still be the number-two seed for the Commonwealth Conference postseason, and will host Albright College in a semifinal on Wednesday. But on this day, the Eagles were swept in the singles competition, and earned one victory in doubles action which was not enough to claim the doubles point.
Juniata?s lone victory came at the second doubles position where the team of Robert Bowser (Dallastown/York) and Tom Nelson (State College/State College) earned an 8-3 win.
In singles, the tightest match was at the fifth singles spot, where Jonathan Cohen (Highland Regional/Hollywood, Fla.) extended his match to a third set. After dropping the first set 6-4, Cohen won the second set 7-6, but then fell by the same 7-6 score in set three.
Juniata will close out its regular season on Monday with a non-conference match against Slippery Rock.
