Walsh Goal Leads Soccer Women To Victory

(Posted September 9, 2006)

Senior forward Alicia Walsh scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give Juniat a 1-0 win over Pitt-Bradford.

Juniata 1, Pitt-Bradford 0 (OT) Bradford, Pa. ? Senior forward Alicia Walsh (Latrobe/Latrobe) scored the only goal of the match just three minutes into the overtime period to give the Juniata College women?s soccer team a 1-0 road victory over Pitt-Bradford Saturday afternoon. Juniata improved to 2-1 with the victory while Pitt-Bradford?s record fell to 1-1. There were plenty of scoring chances over the 90 minutes of regulation, but the game?s lone goal didn?t come until the third minute of the extra session. It was then that Walsh beat Pitt-Bradford keeper Rebecca Brandt with an unassisted tally that gave Juniata the 1-0 victory. Up until that point Brandt had been the story of the match as she turned away a Juniata onslaught to keep the match scoreless. The Eagles out-shot the home team 25-4 for the match, and forced Brandt into making 16 saves in the contest. Twelve of those saves came in the first half as the Eagles looked to take an early advantage, but the team was unable to find the back of the net. In the second half Juniata struggled to force saves, as just two of the team?s 12 shots required a save from Brandt. Juniata keeper Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) earned her second-consecutive shutout by making three saves in the match. Two of those three stops came in the second stanza as the junior keeper kept the game knotted at zero. The Juniata defense has been stellar in the early part of the season. After conceding an average of 1.82 goals per game last season, through three matches this year the Eagles have surrendered just 0.33 goals per game. Juniata will test that defense again on Monday when the Blue and Gold host Rutgers-Camden for a non-conference match. ###
