Soccer Women Play To Scoreless Tie

Juniata 0, Penn State-Altoona 0 HUTNINGDON, Pa. â?? The Juniata College women\'s soccer team had the better chances and certainly more of them, but in the end the Eagles couldn\'t break through the Penn State-Altoona defense as the two teams played to a scoreless 0-0 draw in non-conference action in Huntingdon on Thursday. Juniata is now 9-3-1 on the season, while Penn State-Altoona\'s record stands at 4-5-3 after the draw. Juniata outshot the visitors 26-3 on the match, but nearly all of those shots came from long range as the Eagles could not find the passes to break through the Lions\' defense. Penn State-Altoona keeper Carol Opiela made 10 saves in the match to capture the shutout as she controlled all of Juniata\'s long-range efforts. The Eagles had several opportunities in the first half, many of them coming off the team\'s seven first-period corner kicks. Alicia Walsh (Latrobe/Latrobe) nearly redirected one corner into the goal on the near post, but the ball went just wide. The play leveled out in the second half as the visitors began creating more dangerous play, particularly on the counter attack. Juniata keeper Lisa Russo (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.) was forced to come off her line several times to thwart Penn State-Altoona scoring chances. The Lions\' best chance came after Juniata\'s Melissa Johnson (John F. Kennedy/Colonia, N.J.) fouled a Lions attacker just outside the box. The ensuing shot by Heather Darnell just missed wide of the post, keeping the game scoreless. Juniata also had some chances on free kicks as several efforts from Sarah Stebbins (Easton/Easton) on direct kicks both in the second half and overtime threatened the goal, but did not find the back of the net. Russo finished the match with one save to claim her sixth shutout of the season. Juniata will return to action on Saturday as the Eagles travel to play Lebanon Valley in a Commonwealth Conference match. ###
