Field Hockey Wins With Late Goals

(Posted October 21, 2006)

Leslie Stern had a goal and an assist as the Eagles claimed a 2-1 victory over Wooster.

Juniata 2, Wooster 1 HUNTINGDON, Pa. - A late goal from Leslie Stern (Red Lion/Felton) proved to be the difference as Juniata claimed a 2-1 victory over visiting College of Wooster on senior day Saturday afternoon in Huntingdon. The win improved Juniata to 14-2 on the season, leaving them just one victory shy of matching the program record for wins in a season. Wooster fell to 12-4 with the loss. All of the scoring game in the second half as Juniata keeper Abby Funk (Lewisburg/Lewisburg) and Wooster goalie Anne Leigh combined to make eight saves in the first half. Seven of those came from Leigh as Juniata pushed to get in front, but were unable to find the back of the cage. Juniata broke through 10 minutes after halftime as Meredith Low (Sun Valley/Aston) converted a Stern assist in the 45th minute to give Juniata a lead. It appeared as though Juniata put the match away with less than five minutes remaining when Stern converted on her eighth goal of the season. Michelle Campbell (Northern Lebanon/Annville) assisted on the goal which gave the Eagles a comfortable 2-0 margin. But the margin proved less than comfortable as less than one minute later Amanda Artmann scored off a Gina Crough assist to cut the lead in half with just less than three minutes left. The Fighting Scots would continue to pressure, but Funk made several of her four second-half saves in the final minutes to help preserve the win. Senior Corinne Hamblet (South Carroll/Westminster, Md.) had a pair of defensive saves for Juniata as well to help the Eagles claim the win. Funk finished the match with five saves while Leigh had eight for Wooster. Prior to the match Juniata recognized five seniors who have helped elevate the Juniata program throughout their career. The quintet of Sarah Bender (Eastern York/York), Sierra Dickman (Foxcroft School/Marshall, Va.), Hamblet, Bobbi Rickenbaugh (East Juniata/McAlisterville) and Kat Vera (Albert Einstein/Silver Spring, Md.) have helped Juniata compile a record of 51-26 over the past four seasons. The Eagles have earned two Commonwealth postseason berths during their careers, with a chance of earning a third this season. Juniata also claimed the program\'s first NCAA Tournament berth during the group\'s careers. Juniata will play its final regular-season conference match of the season on Tuesday as the Eagles host Elizabethtown. ###
