(Posted March 8, 2007)
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Juniata College softball team closed its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. by splitting a pair of games on Thursday. Juniata downed Concordia 11-5 in the first game of the day but then suffered an 11-1 set-back in the second game to finish the trip with a record of 4-4. Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) picked up the win for Juniata in game one as the Eagles scored seven runs in the first two innings to take control of the contest. Erb went all seven innings for Juniata, surrendering five runs on seven hits while striking out six. All of Concordia\'s five runs came in the fourth inning as the team tried to cut into the Juniata edge. The Eagles got started quickly when they pushed across three runs in the top of the first. The Blue and Gold added four runs in the second and then another two in the third. Single runs in the fourth and fifth innings provided the winning margin. Rachel Nagy (Nazareth/Nazareth) was 3-for-4 at the play for Juniata while Jackie Morley and Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg/Hollidaysburg) both had two hits in four at bats. In game two, a big inning from Division II Catawba was too much for the Eagles to overcome. After a scoreless first inning, Catawba posted seven runs in the top of the second. Juniata answered back with a single run in the bottom of the frame, but the visiting team pushed across another four in the third to reach the final margin. After surrendering the 11 early runs, Juniata starter Pam Mansell (Penns Valley/Centre Hall) pitched three scoreless innings the rest of the way. She was charged with the loss. Nagy, Tara Carl (Otto-Eldred/Duke Center), Morley and Elsann Machotka (South Regional/Manahawkin, N.J.) each finished with one hit in the game. With its spring trip concluded the Eagles are scheduled to return to action March 17 with a home doubleheader against conference rival Susquehanna. ###
