Environmental Ethicist David Orr to Speak at Juniata

(Posted November 26, 2001)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- David Orr, an author, academic and lecturer who practices "environmentalism as a question of ethical design," will visit Juniata College to outline his theories on "Designing a World That Works" at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in Alumni Hall in the Brumbaugh Science Center on the Juniata campus.

The event is free and open to the public. The lecture is sponsored by the Will Judy Lectureship Series.

Orr is the author of "Earth in Mind" and "Ecological Literacy," and an authority on global warming who has written more than 90 articles focusing on the environment in a variety of publications.

The central issue in Orr's writings and lectures centers on how people can practice ethical living within the environment in order to sustain and maintain the natural resources and ecology of the earth. "We are changing the chemistry of the atmosphere at a rate that is awesomely fast," he was quoted in an article for an Oberlin College Web site. "We simply don't know what we are doing."

Orr is professor and chair of the environmental studies program at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. He received the 1993 National Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation and received the 1992 Lyndhurst Prize from the Lyndhurst Foundation.

Orr was reared in New Wilmington, Pa., and credits his boyhood time spent in nearby forests and fields with awakening his interest in the environment.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Westminster College in 1965 and went on to earn a master's degree from Michigan State University in 1966. He earned a doctorate in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973.

The Will Judy Lectureship Series was established by Captain Will Judy, an attorney and publisher who graduated from Juniata College in 1911. Most of his work involved publications about dogs, including the writing of eight books, editing a dog encyclopedia, and serving as publisher for Dog World magazine. Judy established the lectureship series in 1960 in order to supplement and enrich the academic program at the college.
