Halloween Instrumental Ensembles Concert Slates Scary Music

(Posted October 22, 2007)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Juniata College Wind Symphony, Percussion Ensemble and Orchestra will be playing frightful music -- that is, compositions intended to thrill and chill the listener, in a special Halloween Concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus. In addition, the college\'s percussion ensemble will put the thump in things that go bump in the night as they \"play\" parts of Rosenberger Auditorium and use other building features as musical instruments in a new composition entitled \"The Haunted Hall,\" written by James Latten, assistant professor of music at Juniata and conductor of all three instrumental ensembles. The concert is free and open to the public. Latten and all of the musicians will be wearing Halloween costumes. All three instrumental groups will be conducted by Latten, who also encourages visitors to wear costumes to the performance. The concert opens with \"Haunted Hall,\" in which members of the percussion group are stationed around Rosenberger Auditorium in order to create musical notes by striking, thumping or playing parts of the structure of the building. Additional building noises will be incorporated into the composition. \"We will be playing different surfaces, such as windows and the floor, and also using our chairs as rhythm instruments,\" says Latten. \"We will also create various sound effects such as dragging chains across cement and some other things.\" The percussionists will also play \"Samba Macabre,\" which is a Brazilian-style adaptation of the well-known orchestral piece \"Danse Macabre,\" by Camille Saint-Saens. The orchestra, which is directed by Debbie Trudeau, lecturer in music, will open its performance with \"Masquerade Waltz,\" by Aram Khachaturian, segue to \"Pavane for a Dead Princess,\" by Maurice Ravel, and end with \"Sorcerer\'s Apprentice,\" composed by Paul Dukas. \"Sorcerer\'s Apprentice\" was made famous in the Disney film \"Fantasia.\" The Wind Symphony will close the concert with Johann Sebastian Bach\'s \"Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,\" which features the frightening Toccato movement made famous in such film scores as \"Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,\" \"Tales from the Crypt\" and \"Fantasia.\" The final selection will be \"Voodoo,\" by Daniel Bukvich.
