Juniata Concert Choir to Perform Mix of Brazilian, American Classics

(Posted October 29, 2007)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Combining the musical influences of Pennsylvania and Brazil, the Juniata College Concert Choir will not only sing classic rock \'n\' roll, pop, bossa nova and sambas, but also incorporate movement into its singing performance at a concert at 3 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 4 in Rosenberger Auditorium in the Halbritter Center for the Performing Arts on the Juniata campus. The concert is free and open to the public. The concert is created as a partnership between Pennsylvania and Brazil, as guest conductor Cicero Alves, director of the choir Coronlaine, from Bahia, Brazil, has programmed the entire concert. Alves, who brought his Brazilian choir to Juniata in 2005 to tour Pennsylvania, is a visiting professor of music at Juniata. He is teaching Juniata\'s vocal courses and directing the choir during the sabbatical of Russell Shelley, Elma Stine Heckler Associate Professor of Music. Alves has divided the performance into five categories: movie songs, rock \'n\' roll, romantic songs, dancing songs and carnival music. He has further divided each category into selections in English and in Portuguese, the dominant language of Brazil. \"In some of the songs we will become a \'show choir\' where body movements and voice will be side-by-side, in order to enrich the song\'s interpretation,\" says Alves. The concert opens with songs of the movies, including \"We Have All the Time in the World,\" from \"On Her Majesty\'s Secret Service,\" \"Moon River,\" from \"Breakfast at Tiffany\'s\" and the title song from the Brazilian film \"Joana Francesca.\" The rock \'n\' roll songs include \"Rock Around the Clock,\" Queen\'s \"We Are the Champions,\" \"As Curvas da Estrada de Santos\" and \"Ovelha Negra.\" The romantic songs include \"Michelle,\" by the Beatles, \"Chega de Sauda/Only You,\" and \"Cancao de America,\" by Milton Nascimento. The concert transitions to dancing music such as \"A Manga Rosa,\" \"Tropicana\" and a reprise of \"Rock Around the Clock.\" The performance will end with a selection of carnival songs (songs celebrating the Brazilian holiday called Carnival). The songs are \"Maracangalha,\" \"Tour,\" \"Quixabeira,\" and \"Nossa Gente.\"
