Hip-Hop Novelist to Speak at Juniata College

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Adam Mansbach, a former hip-hop journalist turned hip-hop novelist, will be at Juniata College speaking on his most recent novel \"Angry Black White Boy\" and other matters of race, humor, writing and music at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Alumni Hall in the Brumbaugh Academic Center on the Juniata campus. The talk is free and open to the public. The lecture is sponsored by the Beyond Tolerance series organized by Juniata\'s Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Mansbach first came to public attention as the editor of the hip-hop journal Elementary and currently teaches writing at the San Francisco Art Institute. His lectures combine spoken-word poetry, hip-hop rhymes, comedy and scholarship to dissect the implications of race, literature, music and popular culture. His work reflects his eclectic interests. Since his founding of Elementary in the 1990s, Mansbach has published novels, a book of poetry, a short-story history book and a rap album. Mansbach is currently promoting the release of his third novel, \"The End of the Jews,\" which is set for release in March, 2008. The novel follows one family from immigration to the United States to their assimilation in America\'s suburbs. Mansbach\'s previous works include the novels \"Angry Black White Boy (2005),\" a satire on hip-hop music and racial identity, \"Shackling Water (2002)\" and the poetry collection \"genius b-boy cynics getting weeded in the garden of delights.\" He also edited and contributed to \"A Fictional History of the United States with Huge Chunks Missing\" and recently released a hip-hop album titled \"Stand for Nothing, Fall for Anything,\" in which Mansback performs as the rap artist Kodiak Brinks. He maintains an active journalism career, writing articles for magazines and newspapers such as Wax Poetic, The Art and Aesthetics of Hip Hop, the Boston Globe, the San Francisco Chronicle and Jazz Times.
