Juniata WBB capitalizes on Elmira turnovers in 75-60 win

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Juniata College tallied 35 points off 28 Elmira College turnovers, and rolled to a 75-60 win over the Soaring Eagles, in women\'s basketball action Saturday night in Huntingdon, Pa. The Eagles (5-3, 0-1 Landmark) fared no better in the ball-handling department, committing a season-high 31 turnovers. Juniata compensated for the turnovers with 53.4% shooting from the field (31-of-58), also a season-high, and dominated Elmira on the glass with a 42-25 rebounding advantage. Juniata trailed Elmira (3-5, 1-2 Empire 8) 31-30 at the half, but opened the second half with a 12-3 run that was fueled by three-pointers from Jill Walsh (Johnstown, Pa./Ferndale) and Claudia McDowell (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley), and put the Eagles in front 42-34 at the 16:47 mark of the second half. The Juniata lead was stretched into double-digits, 55-45, on a McDowell layup at the 11:13 mark of the final half. The Eagles did not score a field goal over the final four minutes of the game, but went 4-of-4 at the free-throw line down the stretch while holding Elmira to just two field goals to successfully defend the lead. Four Eagles scored in double figures, led by Jen Hnatuck (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) who logged the second double-double of her career with a season-high 18 points and 15 assists. Kelly Ashcraft (Bellefonte, Pa./State College) tallied a season-high 22 points, while McDowell finished with 15 points and Walsh chipped in with 10. McDowell also dished out six assists. Ali Meckey (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll) was credited with four steals on the night. Elmira was led offensively by Kourtney Troutman with 15 points, including a 3-of-8 effort from three-point range, and 12 points by Erin Rupell. Juniata returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 2, when they host Thiel College at 6:00 p.m. at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center. -30-
