(Posted January 5, 2008)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Brockport State went 8 for 10 at the foul line in the last stretch of the game to clinch a 77-67 win against the Juniata College women's basketball team, Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the 2008 Juniata Holiday Tournament in Huntingdon, Pa.

Juniata (6-5, 0-1 Landmark) tied the game at 10:50 in the second half with a three-point basket by Jill Walsh (Johnstown, Pa. / Ferndale). Brockport (7-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) answered back with a basket and a three-pointer from Courtney Hines (Johnstown, N.Y. / Johnstown) to secure the Golden Eagle lead for the remainder of the game.

Juniata cut the lead to a two-possession game several times late in the second half, but that was as close as the Eagles could get. Brockport's lead reached its widest at 12 points, 74-62 with 58 seconds left in the game, following a pair of successful free throws by Ashley Broadhurst (Sauquoit, N.Y. / Utica Notre Dame). The foul shots were two of the five that Broadhurst hit in the final minute of the game to preserve the Brockport win, on her way to earning Tournament MVP honors.

Juniata finished the game with four players in double figures lead by Kelly Rotan (Atco, N.J. / Hammonton), shooting her career high with 16 points, 14 of which where scored in the second half alone. Following Rotan was Kelly Ashcraft (Bellefonte, Pa. / State College) with 11 points. Ali Meckey (Ebensburg, Pa. / Bishop Carroll) and Claudia McDowell (Alexandria, Pa. / Juniata Valley) each had 10 points on the night. Meckey also added five steals to the Eagles' fight.

Brockport's offense was lead by Brenlyn Campbell (Williamsville, N.Y. / Lewiston-Porter) shooting a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Broadhurst finished the game as the Golden Eagles' leading scorer with 25 points. Hines also tallied double digits for Brockport with 16 points on the night.

Juniata's McDowell and Ashcraft were both named to the All-Tournament Team along with Brockport's Hines. Rounding out the All-Tournament Team were Hamilton's Pumla Sathula and Megan Bouwens from Adrian College.
Juniata returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 8, when they face former MAC rival Elizabethtown College at 7:00 p.m. in Elizabethtown, Pa.
