Juniata College Junior Named Bonner Leader

(Posted January 21, 2002)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --Jayme Miller, a junior at Juniata College studying social work and the daughter of Tom and Karen Miller of Kenhorst, Pa., was named a Bonner Leader by Juniata College, to honor a commitment to perform 900 hours of service over the next two years with a tutoring program in the Huntingdon community and a prevention/intervention program in the Huntingdon Area School District.

Miller is coordinating the Sunday-night tutoring program at the Huntingdon Community Center. The program was developed by Juniata's Circle K student organization. Miller recruits tutors and tutees, publicizes the program in local schools, gathers SAT preparation information for the program, supervises the tutoring session at the community center on Sunday evenings, and tutors students.

She is also serving with the PULSE (People Using Leadership Skills Effectively) program in the Huntingdon Area School District, helping to plan PULSE Club events at Huntingdon Area High School and after-school events at the Huntingdon Area Middle School. Miller will be helping to plan and implement the PULSE retreat and follow-up activities at the middle school in the spring.

The Bonner Leaders program is a partnership of the Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J.; AmeriCorps; and the Office of Service-Learning and Volunteer Programs at Juniata College. Through this new program, eight students will perform 900 hours of community service over a two-year period. Bonner Leaders serve in a non-profit agency, helping to coordinate programs and recruit volunteers, for two consecutive academic years, and have the opportunity to participate in a summer internship during their term of service.

In addition to performing direct service, the Bonner Leaders benefit from leadership training and are mentored by Juniata administrators and alumni. Depending on eligibility, most Bonner Leaders are paid through the Federal Work-Study program; and upon completion of their 900 hours of service, they receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,362.50.

Miller is a 1999 graduate of Governor Mifflin Senior High School.
