(Posted April 2, 2008)
GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Juniata College's 11-game winning streak came to an end as the Eagles dropped an 11-2 decision to Messiah College, in baseball action Wednesday night in Grantham, Pa. Messiah took the lead with a single run in the first inning and three more in the second. Two of the Falcons' runs in the second came across on a single by Craig Mease, with another singled home by Adam Ranck. Juniata ended the Falcons' shutout bid with one run in the top of the fourth, when Greg Hoffman (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) reached on a single up the middle and scored on a Shawn McDonald (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Carnevin) single to right field. The Falcons tacked on three more runs in the fifth, to take a 7-1 lead. Two of the runs scored on a Ben Jordan double, which scored Jon-Mike Richards. Jordan himself advanced to third and then scored on a throw and an Eagle error during Juniata's attempt to get Richards out. Messiah added a single run in the sixth, with Kyle Stuckey crossing the plate before the completion of an inning-ending double play. Three more Falcons runs, all unearned, scored in the seventh to complete the Messiah scoring. Juniata put up one more run in the eighth as Hoffman scored on Kevin Campbell's (Darnesville, Md./Poolesville) fielder's choice grounder to the shortstop. Eagle starter John Love (Loysburg, Pa./Northern Bedford) allowed eight hits and six earned runs with four walks in five-and-a-third innings of work, and was charged with the loss. Messiah's Chandler Sheaffer scattered the 10 hits he yielded in seven complete innings of work, and took the win to improve his record to 2-1. The loss ended Juniata's 11-game winning streak, which matched 11-game streaks in 1930 and 1989 as the longest in program history. The Eagles will return to the Landmark Conference loop on Saturday, April 5, when they face the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. -30-
