Women's soccer succumbs to Penn State-Altoona in double OT

(Posted September 20, 2008)

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Juniata College women's soccer's undefeated season ended Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 double overtime loss to Penn State-Altoona at Spring Run Stadium in Altoona, Pa.

Juniata (5-1-0, 0-0-0 Landmark) yielded the game winner in the 102nd minute of play, as Penn State-Altoona's Danika Mull took advantage of a Juniata turnover in its own end of the field, and let loose a looping shot that cleared Eagle keeper Kristen Penska (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) and found the far corner of the goal.

"I really liked our momentum going into overtime," said Juniata head coach Scott McKenzie. "They won the first half, and we probably won the second half. But in overtime we lost possession and you get punished whenever you do that."

The Lions (7-0-0, 0-0-0 AMCC) outshot Juniata 15-6, and had eight corner kick opportunities to the Eagles' two. Penn State-Altoona was also whistled for offsides five times.

Penska played all 102 minutes in goal for the Eagles, recording three saves. The Lions' Amber Werner played the first 45 minutes and made one save, while Lindsay Raspanti finished out the game making one save over 57 minutes.

"We never really sustained a coherent attack in their third," said McKenzie. "Our midfielders struggled early to maintain possession, but we got better in that area as the game went one. In the end, our forwards didn't work in concert today to press the attack. But, and I can't say this enough, you can't give up possession in your own third of the field in an overtime game - and that's what we did."

Juniata returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when it travels to Stevenson, Md., to face Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College). Game time is 4:00 p.m.
