Hess' late goal lifts men's soccer past Alvernia

(Posted September 30, 2008)

READING, Pa. -- Juniata College forward Bryan Hess (Hanover, Pa./South Western) scored in the 85th minute to lift the Eagle men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Alvernia University, Tuesday afternoon in Reading, Pa.

Off a throw in, Hess dribbled through several Alvernia defenders inside the 18 yard box, and released a shot into the lower right corner of the Crusader goal.

Hess' goal completed a Juniata (5-4-1, 0-0-1 Landmark) comeback that began in the 56th minute on Noah Bowers' (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) one-touch goal past Alvernia keeper Richard Kessler, with an assist by Drew Steffen (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land). The goal was Bowers' fifth of the season.

Alvernia (2-6-1) took an early lead in the contest, when the Crusaders' Morgan Davidheiser scored an unassisted goal in the 19th minute.

"It was another hard fought game," said Juniata head coach Dan Dubois. "We told the guys a week ago that every game from here out was going to be a tough game, and we would have to be fighters - and that's what we did today."

Juniata keeper Ted Sonneborn (Syracuse, N.Y./Manlius Pebble Hill) did not record any saves over his 90 minutes in the Eagle goal, while Kessler logged three saves against two goals allowed.

Overall, Juniata outshot Alvernia 11-8, but the Crusaders had a 5-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Juniata's next contest will be at home this Saturday, when the Eagles host Catholic University of America in a Landmark Conference clash at 3:30 p.m. on Winton Hill Field.
