Women's soccer upends regionally ranked Dickinson in overtime

(Posted October 8, 2008)

CARLISLE, Pa. -- Juniata College freshman Aimee Radic's (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) goal in the eighth minute of overtime lifted the Eagle women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Dickinson College, Wednesday afternoon in Carlisle, Pa.

Radic scored her unassisted marker with 2:30 remaining in the first overtime period, after collecting a loose ball just outside of the Dickinson box, and made a run straight at the Red Devil goal. She beat Dickinson keeper Kailynn Hartmann with a shot to the lower right corner.

Dickinson (6-3-2) outshot the Eagles 11-2 over the 98 minutes played, including a 7-2 advantage in the second half. The Red Devils were whistled offsides on 10 occasions, while Juniata was not called offsides once. Dickinson also enjoyed an 11-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Juniata keeper Kristen Penska (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) recorded a career-high eight saves in the shutout victory, while Dickinson's Hartmann was credited with a pair of saves.

The Eagle defensive unit kept Dickinson off-balance all afternoon, preventing the Red Devils from taking full advantage of their scoring and set piece opportunities. In the 75th minute, Dickinson had three corner kick opportunities in a the span of 55 seconds, but failed to send even a single shot at the Juniata goal.

"Defense is all about attitude, and our backs really had it today," said Juniata head coach Scott McKenzie.

The win was Juniata's second over a regionally ranked program this season; Dickinson is currently ranked 10th in the Middle Atlantic Region in the adidas/National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. The Eagles defeated Gettysburg College 2-0 earlier this season, for the first win over a regionally ranked foe in program history.

Juniata (7-3-0) will return to action this Saturday, Oct. 11, when it travels to Madison, N.J., to face Drew University in a Landmark Conference matchup.
