HUNTINGDON, Pa. â?" Juniata College scored three straight goals to open the second half and cruised to a 3-1 win over the University of Scranton, in Landmark Conference field hockey action on Saturday at Winton Hill Field in Huntingdon.
The win improved Juniata's mark to 5-11 overall, 2-3 in the Landmark, and was crucial to keeping the Eagles in the hunt for a Landmark Conference Tournament berth. Juniata has just one conference game remaining on the schedule, a November 1 contest at home against Goucher College.
After a scoreless first half, Juniata freshman Brittany Kauffman (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) broke the deadlock with her unassisted goal just under three minutes into the second half. Fellow newcomer Kara Buda (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) widened the Eagle lead to 2-0 with 29:24 left on the clock, scoring off an assist from Shauna Deschenes (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita).
Sophomore Carolyn Gibson (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) gave Juniata an added marker with 16:18 showing, with Paula Price (Camp Hill, Pa./East Pennsboro) getting credit for the assist.
Juniata lost its shutout bid with 9:44 remaining, when an own goal got past Juniata goalie Abby Funk (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg).
Funk recorded one save while playing all 70 minutes in the Juniata cage, while Scranton goalie Kristina Goetz was credited with two saves and charged with all three goals allowed. Juniata outshot the Royals 5-2; the two teams each had six penalty corner chances.
Juniata returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it faces Kenyon College at 1:00 p.m. in a game played in Slippery Rock, Pa.
