Juniata Biology students win awards for research

Three faculty advisors and 12 students attended the 2008 meeting of the Allegheny Branch of the American Society for Microbiology, held at Bucknell Univeristy November 14th and 15th. The students presented their undergraduate research projects as a talk or as a poster in sessions with undergraduates from other schools in central and western Pennsylvania. Several Juniata students received awards for their presentations:

Oral presentations:
1st place: Travis Hull (mentor, Dr. Jennifer Bennett) The role of EAL/GGDEF phosphodiesterase genes in the non-motile soil bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor.

3rd place: John O'Donnell (mentor, Dr. Jill Keeney) Regulators of ribonucleotide reductase inhibit Ty1 transposition in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.


Poster presentations:
1st place: Ryan Johnson (mentor, Dr. Jennifer Bennett) Characterization of a hypothetical protein involved in Streptomyces sporulation

2nd place: Nisha Pulimood (mentor, Dr. Jill Keeney) Analysis of gene expression in Saccharomyces cerevisiae during Ty1 retrotransposition.
