Juniata women's basketball breezes past SUNY Geneseo

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Senior guard Claudia McDowell (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) tallied 27 points and collected All-Tournament team honors while leading Juniata College to an 88-49 win over SUNY Geneseo, in the consolation game of the 2008 Wilmington College Tip-Off Tournament in Wilmington, Ohio.

McDowell shot 10-of-15 from the field, including a perfect 5-of-5 mark from beyond the arc, with a game-high eight rebounds, while dishing our four assists with seven steals.

Newcomer Brittany Ryder (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) tallied 11 points, and senior forward Kelly Ashcraft (Bellefonte, Pa./State College Area) dished out six assists.

Juniata (1-3) roared out to an 11-0 lead, and opened with a 20-2 run to start the game. The Eagles held Geneseo to just two field goals in the first 17 minutes of the opening half, and allowed a total of five in the entire first half. Juniata's lead reached 44-11 at the 1:24 mark of the first stanza, after a three-pointer by Meagan Raville (McSherrystown, Pa./Delone Catholic).

The second half was entirely dominated by Juniata. The margin reached 40 points midway through the frame, when a Gina Piccolini (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) three-pointer with 10:41 showing gave the Eagles a 68-27 lead. That was quickly followed by a jumper from Jenny Cunningham (McVeytown, Pa./Lewistown), which gave Juniata its widest lead at 43 points, 70-27.

Juniata shot .515 (34-66) from the field, including a 12-of-19 mark from three-point range. Defensively, the Eagles held Geneseo to just .375 shooting, with just 18 field goals over the entire game. The Blue Knights were forced into making 22 turnovers, resulting in 26 Juniata points.

Juniata returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25, when it hosts Penn State Altoona at 8:00 p.m. at the Kennedy Sports + Recreation Center in Huntingdon, Pa.
