Berkey free-throw lifts Juniata men to 77-76 victory over Moravian
(Posted January 31, 2009)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Junior guard Jeff Berkey (Stoystown, Pa./Shanksville-Stonycreek) converted the first of two free-throw attempts with nine seconds left on the clock, and that proved to be the difference as Juniata College upended Moravian College, 77-76, in Landmark Conference men's basketball action Saturday evening in Huntingdon, Pa.
Berkey broke a 74-74 deadlock with his layup with only 51 seconds showing on the clock, giving the Eagles a two-point lead.
After an unsuccessful three-point attempt by Moravian's Nelson Leon and a pair of turnovers by each squad, Berkey went to the line after being fouled by the Greyhounds' Sergio Camacho. Berkey drained the first attempt, but the second shot caromed away and was rebounded by Leon.
Moravian's Charlie Rigoglioso cut the margin to one point with a layup with three seconds on the clock, but Juniata was able to put the ball in play on the ensuing in-bounds, burning off the remaining time on the clock.
Juniata (4-16, 2-7 Landmark) had been trailing by as many as nine points in the first half, and was down 43-38 at the break. The Eagles scored the first five points of the second half to tie the game, and the game became a see-saw affair from then on with seven lead changes and four ties.
Berkey finished with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor, while junior Ryan Jones (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) had 19 points. Senior Eric Mueseler (Latrobe, Pa./Latrobe) tallied 14 points while dishing out five assists.
Moravian (7-12, 3-6 Landmark) had four players in double figures, led by Camacho with 18 points.
Juniata makes its final road trip of the regular season next weekend, starting with a matchup against Catholic University on Saturday, Feb. 7, in Washington, D.C.
