Softball improves to 3-1 with DH sweep over Wentworth and LaRoche

(Posted March 10, 2009)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Senior Tara Carl (Duke Center, Pa./Otto-Eldred) collected six hits while Rachel Nagy (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) had five to lead Juniata to a doubleheader sweep over Wentworth (Mass.) and LaRoche College, Tuesday morning in Myrtle Beach.

Juniata downed Wentworth 12-0 in the opener, then upended LaRoche 5-1 in game two, to improve its record to 3-1.

In game one, Juniata posted five runs in the first inning and six runs in the second to take an early lead over the Leopards.

In the first inning, Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) reached on the error, and Carl and Stacy Nagy (Millerton, Pa./Troy) each stroked singles to open the frame. Rachel Nagy plated Stacy Nagy and Carl with a double, and eventually came home on Jackie Morley's (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) grounder to third, which resulted in a Wentworth error.

The Juniata second began with a walk to Denalyn Spratt (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) and three singles. After a sacrifice fly by Liz Schmitt (Knoxville, Tenn./H. Frank Carey, N.Y.), the Eagles picked up more runs on RBI singles by Caley McCool (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) and Morley. Spratt drove in another run with a single on her second at-bat of the inning, before Eckard's pop-up to first ended the inning.

Starter Alyssa Erb (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) fanned nine Wentworth batters while allowing just two hits, to improve her record to 2-1. Wentworth starter Caylee Johanson surrendered 12 hits against just four strikeouts, and was tagged with the loss.

In game two, Juniata posted one run in the first when Eckard reached on a lead-off single, eventually scoring on Schmitt's RBI single.

LaRoche got that run back in the top of the third, when Cara Giannandrea reached on a two-out single. Giannandrea stole second, then scored on a base hit by Sydnie Martin.

The Eagles took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third, with Eckard opening the frame with a triple. She was singled home by Carl, who crossed the plate later in the inning. Rachel Nagy also had a single and was eventually driven home by McCool, who picked up the last of Juniata's five hits in the frame.

Juniata picked up an insurance run in the sixth, while Eagle pitcher Pam Heinrichs (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) retired the side in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Heinrichs fanned four RedHawk batters while scattering three hits to earn her first collegiate victory.

LaRoche starter Jessica Cullum was pounded for 12 hits, and was charged with the loss.

Juniata will face the Univ. of Charleston and Keystone College in Wednesday's doubleheader starting at 9:30 a.m. in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
