Eagle track & field teams break-in resurfaced Oller Track at Juniata Quad meet

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Seniors Kelsey Buffenmyer (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal) and Katie Tavenner (Oaks, Pa./Spring-Ford) each captured a pair of first place finishes in the women's events while senior Kyle Mazur (Ogdensburg, N.J./Morris Catholic) and Patrick Filamor (Wanchai, Hong Kong/Int' School of Manila) had a pair of individual firsts for the men, at the 2009 Juniata Quad, Saturday at Knox Stadium.

The meet was Juniata's first home track event in nearly four years, and took place on the newly resurfaced Oller Track at Knox Stadium. Also put to use for the first time was Juniata's new hammer cage on East Field.

Buffenmyer won the long jump with her effort of 17-8, and took the high jump after clearing the bar at 5-5. She also set a new Juniata record in the 100m hurdles, finishing second with a time of 15.96 seconds â?" eclipsing Jessica Sprinkle's mark of 16.08 seconds set back in 2000.

Tavenner won the discus with a throw of 110-0, and also captured the hammer throw with her mark of 117-11 â?" a throw that was over 14 feet better than her nearest competitor.

Other first place finishes were posted by Amy Reynolds (Harpers Ferry, W.Va./Jefferson), who won the 400m dash with a time of 61.18; Jessica Koenig (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) in the 3000m (10:57.53); Melissa Johnson (Colonia, N.J./John F. Kennedy) in the 400m hurdles (70.43); and Stephanie Varner (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) in the pole vault (9-9). Kristyn Ginter (Tyrone, Pa./Bellwood-Antis) rounded out Juniata's list of top finishers with her throw of 105-9 in the womens's javelin.

Juniata's 4 x 100m relay team finished in first place with a time of 51.42.

The women's team finished second out of three teams with 141 points, trailing Messiah College (158.50) and ahead of Elizabethtown College (114.50).

Filamor won the 100m dash with a time of 11.34, and edged out the competition in the long jump with a throw of 20-9 ¼. Mazur, already an automatic qualifier in the javelin for this May's NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships, won the javelin at Saturday's meet with a mark of 191-2. He also won the shot put with a throw of 43-0 ¼.

On the track, George Bodziock (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Bishop Guilfoyle) won the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.95 seconds, while Aaron McCoy (Muncy, Pa./Hughesville) captured the 400m hurdles in 60.97.

The Eagles captured all but two of the field events during the afternoon. Ryan Baird (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) won the pole vault (14-0 ¾); Jeremy Boback (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) took first in the discus (118-5), and Ryan Johnson (Mountaintop, Pa./Crestwood) captured the hammer throw (139-4).

The men's team also finished second out of three teams in the meet with 126 points. Elizabethtown won the meet with 141 points, while Messiah College was third with 118 points.

Houghton College (N.Y.) was scheduled to compete in Saturday's meet, but was forced to cancel on Saturday morning due to transportation difficulties due to weather.
