Volleyball Drops to Second After Weekend in Texas

(Posted November 3, 2009)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - A weekend spent in San Antonio, Texas, playing three nationally ranked opponents and going 2-1 would be an excellent weekend for any program. Unless that team was the number one team in the nation and the one loss was to the nation's second-ranked team. The Juniata College women's volleyball team dropped to no. 2 in the latest AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 Poll, released Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles traveled to Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas and took on the 18th, eighth, and second ranked teams in the country. They first took down the 18th ranked Trinity, 3-0, before beating no. 8 Wittenberg, 3-1, on Saturday, Oct. 31. The final match of the tournament was also the featured match as the Eagles took on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Juniata held a 13-11 advantage in the fifth set, but the Titans battled back and took the next four points, the set, and the match.

This was the second time the no. 2 team took down the top ranked team in 2009. Juniata was apart of the first matchup as well, knocking off Emory University, 3-1, on September 12.

This was the second matchup between the top two teams in 2009. Juniata has been apart of both of those games, winning the first matchup against Emory University, 3-1, on September 12, as the number two team before bowing out against the Titans as the first ranked team.

This week, Wisconsin-Oshkosh jumped the Eagles in the polls gaining 594 points and 22 first place votes. Juniata is now 29-3 and gathered 574 points and one first place vote, good enough for second place. Washington-St. Louis remains in third with 557 points, receiving the final first place vote. Emory University holds in fourth recording 529 points while Hope College garnered 482 and a fifth place spot.

Ohio Northern (462), Wisconsin-Whitewater (424), Carthage (419), St. Thomas, Minn. (386), and Texas-Dallas (372) round out the top ten. Texas-Dallas is the lone undefeated team in the nation, with a record of 23-0.

Juniata will host the 2009 Landmark Conference Championships this Saturday, Nov. 7, after they earned a 6-0 record and the first place seed.
