Juniata softball upended by Moravian's walk-off homer in Landmark Tourney opener

(Posted May 7, 2010)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- A walk-off home run by Moravian College in the eighth inning carried the host Greyhounds past Juniata College, 3-1, in the opening game of the 2010 Landmark College Softball Tournament at Moravian's Blue & Grey Field.

Moravian's Shannen Mohr belted Juniata starter Alyssa Erb's (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) offering over the fence just to the left of straightaway center field, also scoring Stephanie Falzarano. Falzarano reached on a leadoff single lined into right field, and was sacrificed around to second by Katie Gross.

Mohr's blast broke a 1-1 tie that had been on the scoreboard since the first inning.

Juniata's Sarah Eckard (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) drew a leadoff walk to open the first, and advanced to second on Stacy Nagy's (Millerton, Pa./Troy) sacrifice bunt. A Rachel Nagy (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) ground out to second allowed Eckard to go to third.

That brought up Jen O'Neill (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), who lined a rocket shot down toward third and off the end of the glove of Mohr at third base, allowing Eckard to score.

Moravian answered in the bottom of the frame, with Falzarano leading things off with a walk. She was sacrificed over to second by Gross, and then scored on a pair of wild pitches.

Each team had its chances to score the go-ahead run, but neither was able to convert. The Eagles had lead off batters get aboard in the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, but never got a runner past second base on each occasion.

For its part, Moravian (28-11) opened the seventh with a single to right field off the bat of Jenna Carmon. Maura Agnew tried to sacrifice Carmon over to second, but her bunt popped up and was grabbed by a diving Amanda Gerlach (Mesa, Ariz./Marcos de Niza) in front of the circle.

Erb fanned three Greyhounds over her seven-and-a-third innings pitched, allowing three earned runs on six hits and a walk as her record fell to 12-8. Carmon went the distance for Moravian in the circle, striking out four Eagle batters and scattering six hits in eight complete innings of work.

O'Neill was the lone Juniata batter to record two hits, while Nagy, Gerlach, Caley McCool (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley), and Steph Frith (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) each had one single apiece.

Juniata (19-17) will play in Saturday's 9:00 a.m. elimination game, against the loser of the Susquehanna University-University of Scranton game.
