GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Juniata College cross country teams ran their fourth meet of the 2010 season on Saturday, Sept. 25 in Grantham, Pa., in the Messiah College Invitational.
In a non-scored meet, the Juniata women were led by the 1-2-3 finish of freshman Katrina Woods (1st in 20:20), sophomore Caroline Morgan (2nd in 20:23), and junior Jessica Koenig (3rd in 20:24).
Woods and Koenig went out with a lead pack of five runners from the start, while Morgan sat back with a chase group early. In the second mile of the race, which featured the most challenging climb of the course, two runners dropped back from the lead group, while Morgan joined Woods and Koenig among the leaders. Those three moved into the lead in the third mile of the race and never looked back.
Junior Casey Hoffman (21st in 23:00) and senior Elizabeth Linde (30th in 23:39) also scored for Juniata.
Sophomores Sarah Trescher and Kelsey Burton also competed for the Juniata women, while three other key performers for Juniata were resting this weekend.
Meanwhile, the Juniata men took second in the four-team field behind the host team, with four of the Juniata men finishing among the top thirteen overall finishers.
Senior Steve Schmitt (3rd in 28:45) led the Juniata men and was followed closely by junior Nik Klena (4th in 29:03). After running in about fifteenth place through the first mile, Klena and Schmitt moved through the field on the hills in the middle part of the course. Senior Kenny Goodfellow (11th in 29:54) and freshman Marty Henderek (13th in 30:03) were the third and fourth finishers for the Juniata men.
Four other athletes also represented Juniata: freshman Connor Robinson (26th in 32:05), Kevin Donahue (32:44), Trevor Guyer (33:19), and Nathan Miller (35:03). Five other Juniata men sat out the meet to rest this weekend.
Up next for the Juniata teams will be the Slippery Rock Invitational at the Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 2. This will be the site of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championships in November.
