Field hockey upended by Oneonta State in regular season finale

(Posted October 30, 2010)

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Oneonta State's Megan Warning scored almost three-and-a-half minutes into overtime, lifting the Red Dragons to a 2-1 overtime win over 17th-ranked Juniata College, in a non-conference field hockey tilt Saturday at All-College Field.

Juniata (15-4) broke a scoreless tie with 26:28 showing on the second half clock, when Shauna Deschenes (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) put home a loose rebound for an unassisted tally.

That lead was short-lived, as Oneonta (11-7) responded just over five minutes later, when Stephanie Fiske took a pass from Jacqueline Camp outside the circle and put a shot past Juniata goalie Moira Nugent (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) .

Neither side managed to find the game-winner over the remainder of the second half, and struggled to even get away decent shots on goal. The Eagles outshot the Red Dragons 4-2 over the second half, but only two of those six shots on goal came with the score tied at 1-1. Juniata's Jacqueline Hoozemans (Delgauw, The Netherlands) and Caroline Phillips (Wilmington, Del./Concord) both put shots on Oneonta goalie Leslie Dauphinais, who turned aside both attempts.

Warning gave Oneonta State the win just three minutes-and-23-seconds into the extra frame, collecting a loose ball inside the circle and putting a shot past Nugent.

Juniata outshot Oneonta State 11-8 over the nearly 74 minutes of play, and had a 13-8 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Nugent tallied five saves in the Eagle goal, while Dauphinais logged six saves for the Red Dragons.

Juniata heads into this week's Landmark Conference Field Hockey Tournament as the top seed, and will host Drew University in a semifinal on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Huntingdon. Game time has yet to be determined.
