Juniata Hosts 'Opportunity Day' for German Language

(Posted November 15, 2010)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- High school students with a great lieben, or love, for the German language can come to the Juniata College campus to experience German Opportunities Day from 8:30 a.m. to about 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Students from Pennsylvania high schools will meet at the college's Enrollment Center to participate in a daylong exploration of all things German. About 70 students are expected to attend.

Every student participating in the program will meet with students who are studying German, several exchange students from Germany and finally, Juniata students who have studied abroad in Germany. In addition, the students will get a chance to meet with faculty in other disciplines.

In addition, all the high school teachers will meet with faculty in the college's Department of World Languages, including Judith Benz, assistant professor of German.

The high school teachers accompanying the students will have the opportunity to earn up to three Act 48 professional development credits or use the extensive lesson resources of Language in Motion, Juniata's award-winning language outreach program.

Among the high schools sending students are: Hollidaysburg Area High School, Pequea Valley High School in Kinzers, Pa., Pine Richlands High School, outside of Pittsburgh, Obama International Studies School in Pittsburgh, and Central Columbia High School in Bloomsburg, Pa.
