Women's volleyball opens 2011 with 3-0 blanking of Hanover College

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Juniata College women's volleyball opened its 2011 campaign with a 3-0 win over Hanover College, Friday evening at the Wittenberg College National Invitational in Springfield, Ohio.
Set scores for Juniata (1-0) were 25-20, 25-15, and 25-13, giving longtime Juniata assistant and first year head coach Heather Pavlik a win in her collegiate head coaching debut.
Junior middle Ashley Schnader (Reinholds, Pa./Garden Spot) paced the Eagle offense with 12 kills and a .526 hitting percentage, to go with one service ace. Junior pin hitter Kelsey Fuller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) tallied six kills and had a hand in a pair of block, and also turned up 11 digs. Freshman Cat Scholl (Austin, Texas/St. Michael's Catholic) came off the bench and put down five kills in her collegiate debut.
Sophomore setter Courtney Greenberg (Fort Myers, Fla./Fort Myers) tallied 30 assists while leading a Juniata side that hit .202 for the match. Much of that buoyed by a .481 hitting clip in the third set alone, when Schnader went 4-for-4 in attacks and Scholl and sophomore outside hitter Amy Miller (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) each went 3-for-5.
Freshman Christine Sumner (Dublin, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) also came on for Juniata in the third set, logging two kills on three attacks. As a team, the Eagles sided out at 92 percent in the final set.
Senior libero Libby Morrison (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) sprawled for 23 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Rachelle Wiegand (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) picked up eight digs.
Hanover (0-1) was paced by Ashleigh Burakiewicz and Abby Merritt with four kills each. The Panthers hit -.057 for the match, and were held to just 16 total kills.
Juniata returns to action on Saturday with a pair of matches against ranked foes. The Eagles will take on No. 5 Wittenberg at noon, followed by a match against No. 2 Emory University at 6:00 p.m.
