GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The Juniata College women's soccer team opened its season with a 6-0 road victory against Pitt-Greensburg, in its season opener Friday evening at Ridilla Field in Greensburg, Pa.
The first of the Juniata (1-0) goals, scored by sophomore midfielder Alicia Snyder (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon), was certainly a memorable way to start out the 2011 season, when Aimee Radic's (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) cross met Snyder's head just six minutes into play.
Radic scored unassisted in the 27th minute, while Taylor Whetsel (Indiana, Pa./Indiana Area) also found the back of the net in the 34th minute. Whetsel continued her scoring streak in the 42nd minute just after a Sydney Masters (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) corner kick.
With a 4-0 lead heading into the second period, the Eagles did not let up on the Bobcats as they posted an additional two goals by the end of the match. Radic posted another assist on the night when she dished the ball to sophomore forward Mackenzie Coulter-Kern (Manchester, In./Manchester) for a goal in the 64th minute. The Eagles ended their scoring spree in the 71st minute with a Casandra Torres (Mount Holly, N.J./St. Mary's Hall/Doane Academy) goal assisted by sophomore midfielder Jennifer Graves (Manchester, Conn./Manchester).
While Pitt-Greensburg didn't manage a single shot in the contest, Juniata ripped 20. The Eagles also had nine corner kick opportunities while the Bobcats came up empty.
Juniata travels to Alfred, N.Y., Saturday to participate in the two-day Alfred University Labor Day Classic. Its first match is Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm against Oswego State.
