Education Student Recieves Scholarship

(Posted November 3, 2003)

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Steve Knepper, 20, a sophomore studying secondary English education at Juniata College from Blairs Mills, Pa. and the son of Gary and Susan Knepper, received a $2,000 scholarship from the Pennsylvania Association for Supervision and Curriculum and Development.

The scholarship can be applied to Knepper?s educational costs at Juniata. He is one of just four undergraduate students in Pennsylvania to receive the scholarship.

Selection for the scholarship is based on faculty recommendations, a written essay, interest in teaching as a career, scholarship (whether the student is in the upper fifth of his or her class) and college activities .

The essay question for applicants asked ?What is the most significant problem in education today?? Knepper wrote his essay on the topic of how better to identify depression among teen-agers. ?It?s a problem that goes un-noticed by a lot of educators,? he says.

Knepper has been very active in Juniata clubs and organizations. He is vice president of the student education club, Juniata Instructors of the Future. He also is treasurer of the English Club and a member of the Street Hockey Club.
