Juniata Volleyball Team Places Five Women on All-Region Team

Huntingdon, PA ? Senior libero Johanna Holtan (Fargo North/Fargo, N.D.), junior setter Carli Dale (Cochranton/Cochranton), junior opposite Katie Charles (Manheim Township/Lancaster) sophomore middle hitter Katie Laucks (Central York/York) and freshman middle hitter Stephanie Kines (Towson/Towson, Md.) have all been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Mid-Atlantic All-Region team.
Senior outside hitter Danielle Hart (Central/Roaring Spring) was picked as an honorable mention for the All-Region team. The five Eagles to earn All-Region recogition will now go on the national ballot for all-American laurels that will be announced in late November. In addition, Kines was tabbed as the Mid-Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year. Dale, who was a second-team All-American during her sophomore season, and Holtan are both repeat All-Region performers. Dale has been on the All-Region team each of her three seasons, including being named the Region Freshman of the Year. Holtan earned her first All-Region selection last season. Juniata?s three other All-Region honorees are on the All-Region team for the first time. Along with the honors bestowed on Juniata athletes, Eagle coach Larry Bock was chosen as the Mid-Atlantic All-Region Coach of the Year.
Dale was picked as the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year following the regular season and then added 99 assists in Juniata?s two matches in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. Dale finished the regular season leading NCAA Division III in assists per game with 13.66, and she moved into second-place all-time in Juniata history with her 99 assists in the NCAA Tournament. She has 4,267 assists for her career. She is also second on the team with 379 digs on the season. With Dale directing the offense, Juniata ranked 14th in NCAA Division III in hitting percentage and were first in the nation in kills per game.
Holtan was an All-Region selection following her junior season, and has been picked as a second-team All-Conference performer each of the past two seasons. Holtan piled up 40 digs during the NCAA Regional, including 32 in the Regional Championship match. Her 32 digs in Juniata?s win over Eastern were her second-highest single match total of the season. She also continues to move up the NCAA all-time dig list. Following play at the NCAA Regional Holtan has now brought up 2,275 digs for her career which leaves her ninth all-time in NCAA Division III in that category.
Laucks has become a main attacking force for Juniata as her play earned her first-team All-Conference honors as a sophomore. Laucks leads Juniata in kills, serve aces and blocks. She tossed in a career-high seven serve aces and added eight kills in a win over Frostburg State in the Regional Semifinal, and then led Juniata with 18 kills and six digs in the win over Eastern. Laucks was an honorable mention All-Region choice following her freshman season and was also a second-team All-Conference pick.
Kines has earned a plethora of honors in her freshman campaign, including being named the Commonwealth Conference Rookie of the Year. Kines leads Juniata in attack percentage and is fourth on the team in kills. Kines showed no trouble adapting to NCAA Tournament play as she pounded out 13 kills and matched Laucks for best on the team with six blocks in the Regional Championship. Kines also closed the year second on Juniata in blocks which helped her capture second-team All-Conference recognition.
In her first full season as a starter Charles has done a little bit of everything for Juniata, and it was good enough to earn her second-team All-Conference status. Charles was third on the team in kills, third in digs, third in aces and third in blocks. Her versatility was on display in the Regional Championship match when she knocked out 10 kills while adding 18 digs. She also had 12 kills and eight digs in the win over Frostburg State along with two blocks.
