4/7/04--Huntingdon, Pa. ? A solid pitching performance from sophomore Lizzie Bartosik (Penn/Granger, In.) and timely hitting helped Juniata rebound and earn a split with visiting Gettysburg College on Wednesday afternoon in Huntingdon. Juniata?s record now stands at 12-5 on the year, and Gettysburg also holds a 12-5 record.

After being held scoreless in game one, the Eagles manufactured a run in the first inning of game two. Amy Gable (Kennard-Dale/Stewartstown) reached base and moved to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third, and then she eluded the tag on a squeeze bunt from catcher Sarah Patterson (Danville/Danville).

Gettysburg came up with an answer in the top of the fourth inning as they put together three straight hits to tie the game at one. Bartosik would allow one more run in the top of the sixth inning, but she scattered nine hits over seven innings to improve her record to 5-2.

After the Bullets tied the game at one, Juniata answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Becky Herr (Hamburg/Hamburg) doubled to start the frame. After a fielder?s choice, Herr came home on a wild pitch. An infield error then plated another run and Juniata had the lead back up to two. After a Casandra Dutzer (Danville/Riverside) single, Jen Piston (Central Bucks East/Jamison) drove in a runner with an infield single to cap the inning.

Herr and Patterson helped create another Juniata run in the fifth as Patterson doubled with one down, then moved to third on a single by Herr. Juniata?s insurance run came in on another error by Gettysburg, the third of the game for the Bullets.

Herr led Juniata with two hits in three at bats. Juniata?s five runs were scored by five different players.

Scoring runs was a problem for the Eagles in game one of the doubleheader. Juniata managed just four hits as Gettysburg?s Shannon Kiry held the Eagles scoreless for the first time this season.

Juniata put itself in an early hole as the visitors put four runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first. Gettysburg piled up four hits, but were also added by a pair of Juniata errors. Three of the four runs scored in the inning off Eagle starter Renae Hobbs (Mount Union/Mount Union) were earned.

Juniata mounted one of its best threats in the bottom of the first as the team loaded the bases with one out. Gable got things started with a single. Then, after a line out to left, Patterson was hit by a pitch and Herr singled to load the bases. But Kiry forced a pop out and a ground out to get out of the inning unscathed.

Juniata would leave a pair of runners on base in both the third and the fifth innings. Juniata stranded 10 runners through the course of the game.

Hobbs closed the game with five runs allowed, four earned, on ten hits. The loss dropped her season record to 7-2.

Gable, Herr, Dutzer and Allison D?Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) had the four hits in the game for Juniata.

The Eagles will return to action on Friday when they host conference foe Moravian for a doubleheader. Moravian is the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III according to the most recent coaches poll.
