Juniata 11, Seton Hill 3

4/15/04--Huntingdon, Pa. ? A four-run first inning paced the Juniata College softball team to a big 11-3 victory over Seton Hill University in Huntingdon Thursday afternoon. Game two of the doubleheader was ruled a forfeit as Seton Hill did not have enough healthy players to begin the game. Juniata is now 14-7 on the season, while Seton Hill fell to 10-13.

The Eagles got the bats started early as they sent 10 batters to the plate and scored four runs in the bottom of the first. A throwing error on a sacrifice bunt brought home Renae Hobbs (Mount Union/Mount Union) who had singled with one out. A line drive double by Becky Herr (Hamburg/Hamburg) plated the second run with an RBI double. Allison D?Ambrosia (State College/Boalsburg) followed with a double of her own to drive in Herr. Abbey Sener (Donegal/Marietta) capped the inning with another double to score D?Ambrosia.

The four runs would be plenty for Eagle starter Hobbs who earned her eighth win of the season by tossing five shutout innings. The Juniata sophomore scattered three hits over five innings while fanning two.

Hobbs again got Juniata?s offense rolling in the second with a lead-off single. She was moved to third with two outs, then scored as D?Ambrosia drilled her second RBI double of the game. Leanne Leymeister (Blue Mountain/Orwigsburg) doubled in another run for Juniata as they took a 6-0 lead.

Seton Hill broke through in the top of the fifth as they scored three runs off Juniata reliever Jessica Darrow (Wellsboro/Wellsboro). The visitors pounded out four hits to notch their three runs with Amber Dietelbach got the big hit with a two RBI single. Darrow did strand two runners on base to maintain the lead at 6-3.

The Eagle offense picked up the slack again as they pushed another four runs across in the bottom of the fifth. Hobbs re-entered the game and promptly drove in Jenna Taylor (Pequea Valley/Narvon) and Piston with a single. Herr then added her second RBI double of the game which drove in another pair of runs.

Juniata would close the game in the bottom of the sixth. Julie Hatfield (Southern Cayuga/Scipio Center, N.Y.) drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and came home on a single from Piston.

Hobbs added to her pitching performance by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Herr was also 3-for-4 with three runs driven and one run scored. D?Ambrosia added a pair of hits for the Eagles while notching two RBI and scoring a pair of runs. Piston finished 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Juniata will return to action on Saturday when they travel to take on conference foe Widener.
