Messiah 5, Juniata 1
Messiah 16, Juniata 1
Grantham, Pa. ? It was a rocky day from start to finish for the Juniata College baseball team as the Eagles were swept by Messiah in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader in Grantham Tuesday afternoon. The losses dropped Juniata to 14-11 on the season and 7-5 in the conference. Messiah upped its record to 17-9 overall and 11-4 in the conference.
Juniata?s offense was quiet throughout the doubleheader. The Eagles did not manage their first hit until the sixth inning. By that point the home team had jumped out to a 5-0 lead off Juniata starter Jayme Fye (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg). Messiah pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the first, then added two runs in the third and fourth innings.
The Eagles broke through with a hit in the sixth as Darren Hake (Red Lion/Red Lion) notched a two out single with a runner on first after a walk. But the threat would end there as Messiah hurler Dave Henninger worked his way out of the jam.
Juniata did manage a run in the seventh as Walt Goedkoop (Manheim Township/Lancaster) walked then came around to score on an error. Juniata would have two more runners on in the seventh, but couldn?t bring them across to cut into the deficit.
Jesse Leonard (Shade/Johnstown) had the other hit in the game for Juniata. Fye allowed five runs on six hits in five innings of work. Only three of the runs were earned as his record fell to 3-3.
Game two went south quickly for Juniata as the Eagles allowed four runs in the bottom of the second. The Blue Jays offense did slow down from there as they pounded out 15 hits in the game. The home team pushed six more runs across in the bottom of the sixth with Chris Regan doing much of the damage with a two-run home run.
Elizabethtown added two runs in the fourth, three more in the fifth, and then capped the scoring with a run in the sixth.
The Eagles used five pitchers in the game, with Cody Zong (Lewistown/McVeytown) being charged with the loss.
Juniata?s lone run came in the top of the sixth as Adam Camberg (Altoona/Altoona) walked then came around to score.
Matt Garner (Bellwood-Antis/Bellwood) had a pair of hits in the game for Juniata.
The Eagles will return to action on Thursday when they take on Penn State-Altoona at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona.
