Distinction in Geology
To become a candidate for distinction in Geology, the student must have completed at least 28 credits in geology courses, at least 10 of which must be at the 300 level, and achieved a minimum 3.0 grade point average in those courses taken in the geology department, by the end of the junior year. Additionally, the student must be recommended as an honors candidate by at least 2 Geology faculty.
Honors Requirements
To receive Distinction in the POE in Geology, the student must:
- Pass both written and oral components of all parts, (A, B, and C) of Honors exams, and
- Successfully prepare, present, and defend an Honors Thesis.
Honors Exams
During her/his senior year, the student must pass an exam in one of the listed topics (at the student's discretion) for each of the columns below:

The student will have up to 1.5 hours to complete the written component of each exam.
Geology faculty will evaluate each written exam.
If a written exam is acceptable, the student will then complete a 1 hour oral examination by Geology faculty for the subject.
A student will be given no more than two attempts to pass both written and oral components for each part of the exam.
Honors Thesis
The student must give a short, written Honors Thesis proposal to the Geology faculty, no later than the mid-term of his/her first term of Senior year. All Geology faculty must agree to, and sign off on, the proposal.
Work directly related to the Honors Thesis must account for a minimum of 4 credit hours.
The Honors Thesis topic must address a specific geological problem, issue, or concept; or a series of related problems, issues, or concepts.
The Honors Thesis may focus on one or any combination of the following and is not meant to exclude work that may have been initiated prior to the fall semester of the senior year:
- field research
- laboratory research
- development and/or implementation of geological computer applications or models
- literature review
The Honors Thesis must be reviewed and approved by all Geology faculty and by at least one Juniata faculty outside of the Department of Geology (Honors Thesis Committee).
The student will present the Honors Thesis in public forum, open to all Juniata students, faculty, and administration.
At the completion of the presentation, the student must adequately address and answer questions presented by those in attendance regarding the Honors Thesis; this constitutes the defense of the Honors Thesis.
The presentation and defense must be approved by the Honors Thesis Committee.
