Academic trips with student participants

Required Workshop

The Director of Environmental Health and Safety provides an Off-campus Safety Workshop for College employees leading student groups off-campus. Please contact the Director for the workshop schedule or additional information.

Driving Safety Rules

  1. Trip leaders are encouraged to insure that there is at least one cellular phone available in each vehicle for use in the event of an emergency.
  2. When drivers are tired or when encountering potentially dangerous conditions, trip leaders should exercise extreme caution and good judgment in terminating a trip and finding lodging en route. Budgetary, time or academic concerns should not be factored into these decisions.
  3. Speed limits must be strictly observed. Any traffic tickets are the responsibility of the driver, not the College.
  4. Seat belts, when available, must be worn at all times.
  5. Alcohol and illegal drugs are prohibited in college-owned or leased vehicles.
  6. Drivers transporting students are prohibited from consuming alcohol before driving.
  7. All college policies apply to students and employees during College-sanctioned travel.
  8. In the event of an accident or other emergency, contact local law enforcement authorities as appropriate and notify College Security at 814-641-3636.

Vehicle Use and Insurance

  1. Trip leaders are encouraged to reserve College vehicles from Facilities Services at least five days prior to travel date.
  2. If College vehicles are not available, rental vehicles should be obtained under Juniata’s name to provide College insurance coverage.
  3. The College’s insurance policy does not cover the use of privately-owned vehicles for College-sanctioned travel.
