Friends Dock Project |
| The Friends of the Field Station have been supporting the rebuilding of the RFS docks in a multi-month project. The new, buoyant docks are decked with 100% recycled plastic decking, and are a huge improvement over the old docks. |
Special thanks to:
- Jim's Anchorage for donating their used docks and floats
- Juniata College for providing funding for the recycled plastic decking
- Friends of the Field Station for additional financial support for the project
- RFS caretaker Joe Wills and RFS staff Brian Pearson for working many, many, many hours on this substantial project.
- The Blair family for attending many work days, and providing tools and expertise that were invaluable to the project
- Jim Dixon and the Alexandria Boy Scout Troop for a day of very hard work
- All the Friends and other volunteers who contributed hard work, tools, and over 350 volunteer hours on this project! |
Volunteers included students, faculty, alumni, Friends, and even fathers, brothers, and husbands of alumni! |
There was help of all ages to drill holes and attach the plastic decking. |
The dock sections were moved down to the lake on a trailer - with the last section by person-power. Weight to counter balance was an important part of the job... Flipping the dock section off of the trailer required many hands... |
The dock sections were surprisingly heavy - until they were floating! |
We also had to move the old docks out of the way... |
The first docks were launched after a June workday - they are still floating even with the whole crew on them! |
The August workday crew smiles after the final section is attached! |
Joe Wills, RFS caretaker, proclaims dock victory! Joe and Brian worked many long, hot hours on the project, in addition to giving up many Saturdays. |
Now, what to do with the old pieces of dock... |
Join us for a work day this November...!
