| What
Makes Shuster Hall Green? |
|
When
Juniata College decided to build and environmental campus
at the Raystown Field Station, it seemed natural to develop
an environmentally friendly one. Shuster Hall, the dining
and classroom facility which saw completion during the Summer
of 2003, is the first building of the new green campus.
Green building design reduces the environmental impacts
of a building on its surroundings based on five major categories:

* Materials and Resources (13 pts.)
* Water Efficiency (5 pts.)

Leadership
in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) ensures that buildings
are indeed green based on a point collection system. Each
category contains specific points, some that must be met and
others that are suggested. LEED certification status then
depends on the number of points a building achieves. There
are currently four LEED categories: |

* Gold (39-51 pts.)
* Platinum (52-69 pts.) |
Shuster
Hall is LEED certified and one of the first 'Green' classrooms
in Pennsylvania.

Sustainability |

every foot disturbed, one was preserved
- Site
was not disturbed greater than 30 yards from building footprint
- This
allows for a thick vegetation buffer between the buildings
and the Lake

light and noise pollution
- Allows
the campus to be discrete and secure - boaters come
to see the lake not the campus
- Construction
waste was recycled or used to create trails around the station
- Disturbed
areas were planted with native vegetation - White Pine,
Hemlock, Dogwood, and Blueberries
