The annual JC-DC Picnic was hosted by Aliceann Wohlbruck '58 and Bernie Hillenbrand at Hillenbruck Farm in Sharpsburg, MD on Sunday, September 24 on a fall day that produced clouds, some sunshine and a couple of stray showers. A total of 37 alumni, family and friends turned out for the gathering, including alumni from 1950 all the way through to the Class of 2004.
Guests began to arrive at the farm during the mid-morning hours and by noon, lunch was served. Bill Adams '57 continued with his farm picnic tradition of manning the grill and cooked up the hot dogs and burgers for those in attendance. The ever-anticipated apple dumpling dessert was put on hold until the formal program for the day came to a completion.
Following lunch, Aliceann and Bernie formerly welcomed everyone and introduced Juniata College professor of history Jim Tuten, an expert on the Civil War, presented The Battle of Antietam from a southern prospective. His words educated and entertained all of those in attendance, including Bernie, who is an expert on the Civil War as well. When Professor Tuten finished his comments, Bernie applauded Tuten’s effort and thanked him for having all of his facts straight.
David Corman ’77, the president of the JC-DC Alumni Club, addressed the group, while Jodie Monger Gray ’88 gave an update on the Juniata Scholarship Fund, Dan O'Sullivan ’64 spoke about the importance of participating in the Juniata Admissions Ambassadors (JAA) program. Director of Alumni Relations, Bub Parker ’91 provided a welcome and update from the College before thanking Aliceann and Bernie for their commitment to Juniata.
Finally, in the photo gallery of this event you will notice an image of the group in attendance watching Professor Tuten, Aliceann and Bernie raising a 15 star flag that flew in 1810 at the time of the construction of the house. The flag was dedicated to the faculty of Juniata in general and to Dr. Tuten the first of the planned annual presentation of faculty members at the Hillenbruck gathering.
