JC-DC, the Juniata College alumni club of Washington, D.C., and J-Club, the sports enthusiasts club, teamed up to support the men’s volleyball team in their match against George Mason on March 31. Prior to the match, thirty alumni, parents, and friends of Juniata gathered at Brion’s Grill before moving to the gym to cheer on the men’s volleyball team against conference rival George Mason.
With Juniata t-shirts, flags, and pom-poms throughout the crowd, the energetic Juniata contingent rivaled the size and enthusiasm of the Mason crowd. Despite the fact that this was the first Juniata volleyball match for many alumni, the fast, explosive, powerful style of men’s volleyball was easy for all to enjoy. Since its establishment in the early 1990’s the varsity men’s volleyball program has risen as a competitive force, already claiming four Molten Division III championships and regularly competing as one of the top five programs in the east coast - Division I, II, and III.
After dropping the first game, Juniata surged back to win game two and tie the best-of-five match at one game each. George Mason recovered and won the third game, but Juniata rallied again and won the fourth game, tying the match at two and sending it to the decisive fifth game. After taking an important early lead, Juniata persevered and earned the victory, 15-9, over a strong Division I opponent. After the teams shook hands, the Juniata crowd erupted with cheers as the players in blue and gold acknowledged the crowd and applauded the fans.
After the game, the alumni, parents, and friends spoke with new head coach Jeremy Price and congratulated the team on an exciting win. As a highlight of the night, the alumni, parents, and friends enjoyed having conversations with the team (not to mention seeing just how tall the players really are).
Following these festivities, a few alumni returned to Brion’s for a quick celebration and a chance to recount their favorite plays of the game (along with a review of the rules). It is safe to say that this event became an instant tradition and that JC-DC and J-Club will be back at Gerogre Mason next year and for years to come!
The decades of 1950's, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000 were represented at this event which drew 45 alumni, family members and friends.
