What do you get when you take 40 Juniatians, baseball and an evening of clear-sky, 70-degree temperatures? The answer is a perfect place to be for a Juniata alumni event.

On Saturday, August 12, a group from the greater Reading, Pennsylvania area gathered at FirstEnergy Stadium to watch the Reading Phillies play host to the Harrisburg Senators for a Double-A Minor League diamond tilt. In addition, the home team squeezed out a 4-3 triumph in 10 innings in front of a sellout crowd of over 9,000. John Castellano singled through the right side of the infield to score Peter Bergeron with two-out in the bottom of the 10th to provide the difference on the scoreboard. Harrisburg rallied with a single run in the top of the ninth to send the game to an extra frame.

It marked the second straight year that Juniata had an alumni event at FirstEnergy Stadium. This time around the group, which included JC grads from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90, and 2000s, sat in the reserved seats behind home plate. The crowd was entertained by both the ballgame and the in-between-inning activities that the Reading Phillie staff orchestrated. A small collection in attendance got together for a “happy hour” in the concession stand area of the ballpark prior to the first pitch and enjoyed some social time.

Alumni from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s were in attendance for the event! Stephen Svarczkopf won an autographed Reading Phillies baseball as part of the day and everyone else stayed dry and the rain held off for the rest of the day. Five new automobiles were given away by sponsors of the Reading Phillies to close the day, but, unfortunately, no one from the Juniata group was lucky enough to walk away with a brand new ride.

To top it all off, it was Classic Harley-Davidson Night at the stadium. Before the game, a Harley parade took place on the warning track and when the contest was over a Harley-Davidson motorcycle was raffled off (unfortunately, no one in the Juniata crowd was the winner of the bike).

Check out the photo gallery above to see some of the fun that was enjoyed by those in attendance!
