Annual Golf Outing in Myrtle Beach, SC

The annual Juniata College Myrtle Beach golf trip reached its five-year anniversary March 9-13, as alumni, family and friends gathered for another memorable journey on the links and good times. This year a total of 16 golfers made the trek to the “golf capital of the world” which was organized for the fifth consecutive spring by Corey Pote ’83. Alumni, family and friends from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Germany (yes, Germany for the second straight year) gathered to take on some of the best courses that Myrtle Beach has to offer. Plenty of blunders and bogeys found their way into everyone’s game, but at the same time there were occasional birdies during the week.
Long Bay Resort (the hot tubs, pools, lazy river, fitness center, breakfast buffet with eggs made to order, and ocean view rooms) was once again "home" to the outing, while golf stops were made at River Hills, Grande Dunes, Oyster Bay, Shaftesbury Glen. Every day reached 55-60 degrees, including the last day that got close to 70 – so, for some, shorts/pants and short-sleeve shirts were the standard dress for the week. The majority of the group got together for dinner each night, but on March 11, those in attendance had the annual dinner at Chuck’s Steakhouse. At the dinner, Juniata Director of Alumni Relations Bub Parker ’91 updated the group on College Hill happenings and publicly thanked Corey Pote for all of his efforts. Corey spoke to next year’s event and plans that he has for it and handed out some awards for the week. In addition, Frank Pote ’73 presented Corey Pote with a gift certificate from the group in appreciation of his volunteer work.
For the second straight year Reinhard Prison, who was a student in the chemistry lab at Juniata in 1985, received the award for the alum that traveled the farthest to join the group in Myrtle Beach. He also promised to bring some friends along to the 2009 outing.
The immediate plans are for this event to take place at the same resort and during the same week of March in 2009. Stay tuned to the web site for more details that will come in the not-so-distant future and plan on joining us (men and women) next spring.
Special thanks to Corey Pote for helping plan and organize this alumni travel event to Myrtle Beach. His efforts in selecting the accommodations and the golf courses the group played made the outing a very successful and enjoyable one for the fifth straight year!!!
