Before fall break, the Juniata College Greenhouse hosted a plant sale that was open to the public. The plants are all grown by student and staff volunteers throughout the year.

Lubica Baranova, a Juniata College employee, spends most of her free time working in the greenhouse. Spending time in nature or around plants has therapeutic benefits, like lowering stress and helping people feel more centered. Baranova said, “I like to be around plants, greenery and nature. Students can come here to just look around or help if they want.” The greenhouse is open to students as long as it is unlocked.

During the sale, the greenhouse was filled with students who wanted to bring more greenery into their dorms and apartments. Most of the plants for sale were cactus and succulent species, which require little watering. This is perfect for those who have busy schedules but still love taking care of plants.

Having plants can even be beneficial to long-term health. Psychologists agree that taking care of a plant can lower blood pressure, improve alertness, raise productivity, lower anxiety and many other health benefits. Whether by volunteering time in the greenhouse or by supporting it through plants sales, nature is an important part of a heathy community.
