Penn State-Altoona 5, Juniata 2

5/4/04--Altoona, Pa.? The Juniata College men?s tennis team played its first non-conference match of the season, and was handed a tough 5-2 set-back against Penn State-Altoona in Altoona Monday afternoon. Juniata fell to 2-2 with the loss.

For the second consecutive match, Juniata got both of its singles wins from the top two spots as Neil Eicher (Altoona/Altoona) and Satoshi Kimura (L.B. Pearsons College (CA)/Nasano, Japan) each picked up singles victories. Eicher won his first set at the number one position 6-4, dropped set two 1-6 and then took the match with a 6-4 win in the third set. Kimura had an easier time at the second singles as he earned his straight-set victory 6-1, 6-2.

Each of the other four singles matches were hotly contested. Brandon Long (Lebanon/Lebanon) won his first set 6-4 at the fifth singles spot, but then dropped the final two sets 6-2, 6-2. David Bullock (Central Bucks East/Jamison), Ali Homurlu (Tarsus American School/Adana, Turkey) and Tom Nelson (State College) each lost one set 7-5 and another set by a 6-2 score.

Penn State-Altoona also took the doubles point despite a win from Eicher and Kimura at the number one doubles. The duo earned a 8-5 victory at first doubles, but the home team claimed an 8-1 win at the second position and an 8-4 victory at the third doubles spot.

Juniata will be back in action tomorrow as the Eagles take on conference opponent Messiah in Grantham.
