Primary Role

  • Provides for the archival presentation and administration of the permanent collection
  • Curate, organize, research and maintain installations from the permanent collection
  • Curate and organize special exhibitions and traveling shows from the museum’s collection and outside venues
  • Continual research on the collection, making that information available to the public
  • Have an understanding of the museum databases for permanent collection, photographic collection and historic archives

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with the Director to find and book loan shows and set the museum’s exhibition calendar
  • Curate four (4) exhibitions per year in the Shoemaker Gallery
  • Exhibition design/gallery preparation
  • Exhibition installation
  • Object preparation (mounting, matting and framing)
  • Preparation/writing of wall text, didactic panels, brochure essays, invitations and exhibition posters
  • Work with Development, Marketing and Print Shop in preparation for invitation mailings prior to each exhibition
  • Photograph/document exhibitions
  • Fill out condition reports for loan exhibitions
  • Be responsible for loan agreements and insurance paperwork accompanying each loan exhibition
  • Make shipping arrangements for loan exhibitions
  • Be responsible for packing and unpacking loan exhibitions
  • Inventory and maintenance of supplies needed for the gallery
  • Supervise museum guards during the academic  year
  • Works closely with museum studies/museum education students to create, develop, and promote outreach programs each year
  • Either for school children or for members of the community (curator and director will each be responsible for one of the programs each year)

  • Supervise summer and academic-year internships as needed
