Studying Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences through the Department of Environmental Science and Studies provides a strong, hands-on learning experience that uses the natural environment to teach and supplement the concepts being taught. Upon completion of course work and graduation from the program students are certifiable as an Associate Fisheries Professional through the American Fisheries Society, the largest international professional society for fisheries conservation.

More than 85% of graduates who have applied to graduate schools in the past five years have been accepted with full funding, and all graduates in the past five years who sought professional positions related to their degrees were hired within weeks of graduation.

    “If you want to get into the field, this is definitely the school to go to for the classes and all the research experience you can get.”

    Nick has taken advantage of many of the opportunities that the ESS Department at Juniata has to offer. In just three years, he has authored or co-authored four presentations and posters at regional conferences and received a scholarly summer mini-grant. He's worked on a variety of research projects such as using data analysis to assess the differences between rusty crayfish, Allegheny crayfish, and their hybrid offspring. Nick has also served as the president of the student club of the American Fisheries Society.

    This course provides an applied experience studying aquatic invertebrates that occupy freshwater ecosystems of North America. Lecture focuses on invertebrate ecology, sampling, monitoring, and analysis strategies for bioassessment, conservation, and description of taxa. Laboratory focuses on taxonomy, classification, and identification of families of invertebrates of the local central Appalachians..
