Implementation

The ACHIEVE Health Literacy Program can be implemented in a variety of ways, whether as a class itself or supplementally to existing health classes. Phase I is most effectively taught in a classroom setting, while Phase II is far more flexible. Students may also work on their CHIPs in a classroom setting, or they may work on them extracurricularly, or even in a study hall. We are also experimenting with the execution of a group CHIP, in which a class works collaboratively to execute the project. As of right now, ACHIEVE implementation is still being piloted, and we are open to any suggestions or constructive criticism.

Huntingdon Area High School

Our first attempt at the implementation of the ACHIEVE Health Literacy Program is at Huntingdon Area High School, in Huntingdon County PA. In this school, Phase I is being taught as a supplement to the existing health classes that are already mandatory for graduation. The health teachers are choosing which modules they will include according to which topics they feel are missing from or need more depth in the existing health curriculum. With respect to Phase II, one student has completed an independent CHIP, and one class is piloting a group CHIP. Unfortunately, we have not had enough CHIPs to hold our CHIP Showcase Event, although we are hopeful we will be able to hold one in the near future.

Following the first marking period of implementation at Huntingdon Area High School, other high schools in Huntingdon County will also implement the ACHIEVE program. We hope to update this page with information about implementation in these schools soon.
