Juniata College to hold open forum on NCAA Division III athletics
(Posted February 22, 2008)
HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College President Thomas R. Kepple, Jr., will discuss possible restructuring within NCAA Division III athletics, and its potential impact upon Juniata's athletics program, during an open forum to be held on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 3:00 p.m. in the Neff Lecture Hall of the von Liebeg Center for Science.
The NCAA's Division III level currently has 440 active and provisional members. It is projected to grow to approximately 480 members by 2020. Issues related to this growth, such as diversity of institutional membership, closely contested votes on important legislative initiatives, and practical challenges including future access to championships, prompted the NCAA to form an Executive Committee Working Group on Membership Issues in 2007.
At the most recent NCAA Convention, this Division III working group recommended the creation of a fourth division of NCAA athletics.
Earlier this month, a survey was sent by the NCAA to each of the member institutions within Division III. This survey, which is to be completed by each institution's president, asks for opinions about subdividing the division or creating a new division, and its implications.
This forum will allow various members of the Juniata community to offer their feedback to President Kepple as he completes the survey.
